Art21 at NAEA 2012

Each year, Art21 presents a wide range of events during the National Art Education Association annual convention. In past years we have featured Art21 artists such as Kryztof Wodiczko, Mel Chin, Mark Bradford, Carrie Mae Weems, and Mark Dion. In addition to presenting their work and ideas on education to a packed ballroom of educators, visiting artists have gotten involved in the conference in diverse ways. In 2009 Mark Bradford visited the vendor area and interviewed teachers to find out what the state of Art Education was. In 2011 Mark Dion hosted a lemonade stand without any lemonade. In 2010, Carrie Mae Weems talked with teachers and students from Baltimore schools about photography, history and narrative.

Additional Art21 sessions have focused on the use of contemporary art and films in the classroom, panel conversations addressing the future of art education and interdisciplinary teaching approaches utilizing contemporary art, and workshops addressing media literacy and strategies for empowering youth through video.

This year, the annual convention will be held in New York City, March 2-4, 2012 and Art21 is presenting the largest number of artist talks, workshops, and events to date.

General Session
Art21 Presents: Janine Antoni "Circuitous Path"
Hilton: Grand Ballroom, 3rd Floor
8:30–9:50 a.m.

Janine Antoni employs a variety of mediums including performance, sculpture, photography and video. Her primary tool for making has always been her own body. She is known for using extreme processes and unusual materials. Antoni's work takes on a physicality that speaks directly to the viewers’ body, unleashing a deeply felt empathetic response. As an educator, Antoni is interested in teaching people ways to develop their individual creative process. Antoni will discuss her own making as an example of the circuitous journey that one travels to arrive at an artwork.

Art21 in Context: Teaching with Contemporary Art on Film and in the Museum Gallery
Off-Site Workshop, Museum of Art and Design
12:00–2:30 p.m.
Tour departs from the Hilton (54th Street entrance) at 11:45am, and returns at 2:45pm
Pre-registration required; SOLD OUT

What are different approaches for looking at and talking about contemporary art in the classroom and in a museum setting? How can we engage educators and students in conversations about why a work of art exists and how it relates to ideas about the world around us? Contemporary art is introducing new materials, media and technologies, as well as new ways of considering what art is and how it is defined.

In partnership with the Museum of Art and Design, this interactive workshop emphasizes inquiry-based learning and connections to thematic strands that support the integration of contemporary art and artists into a variety of curriculum areas.

Participants will explore the work and processes of contemporary visual artists by viewing short films from the PBS series Art in the Twenty-First Century, and through a guided tour by Museum of Art and Design education staff. Combining documentary film with in-gallery investigation, educators will discuss and develop dynamic strategies to incorporate contemporary art in their teaching practice. All participants will receive a copy of a DVD of Art in the Twenty-First Century and the accompanying Educators' Guide.

Super Session
"Sown Within": A Performative Workshop with Janine Antoni
Sheraton: Metropolitan Ballroom East, 2nd Floor 3:30–4:50 p.m.

Springing from her use of the body in her artwork, Antoni will lead a workshop that focuses on the body as a tool for exploration. It is her belief that to know oneself intimately opens up the possibility of using one’s strengths and weaknesses in the service of art. Be prepared for an inner investigation. Dress comfortably to move.
